Zerynthia was born to an island tribe of the Amazon Nation which had successfully defended itself against a wave of Greek pirates. It was thought after this victory their lands would be secured, but word of the crushing defeat...handed out by women no less...reached the other city-states who in their wounded pride designed a great fable of the Amazon's true purpose and mandate. To destroy the Greek world, primarily that of men.
Reared within the beliefs of the Amazon Nation, Zerenthia had proven herself at a tender age in that fateful conflict. Killing a number of men she was rewarded with having the sacred belt, granted to her by her mother in symbol of her secret soul name, taken from her. After this Zerynthia was considered an adult and able then to craft a belt of her own making. It was after this that she was brought into the Nation as a full grown woman.
From there on her training was taken to a completely new level and with their leader sensing that the pirates may return to exact their revenge, the entire tribe was put through a lengthy process of training and building up of the coastal defenses. In the end it proved little good as the pirates did indeed return...but not alone. With her tribe's defeat it proved to be the doorway through which the Greeks and other nations used to infiltrate deeper and deeper into Amazon territory.
The scattered remanents of her tribe fled deeper into the Nation, becoming lost in the deep mysteries of the land which they embraced and knew no fear of. However, the same cannot be said for the "city-dwellers" people who are typically afraid of the mysteries which explains their insistence in living behind closed walls and gates. They have no soul at least, that is what Zerynthia had been taught but over time as she fled with her people, becoming loosely affiliated with the tribes that would give her and the others sanctuary...she began to understand the falsehoods brought down to her in her teachings.
The soldiers of the cities are indeed more aware of the mysteries and as such, know a certain degree of fear but as the years pass on they too have begun to adapt to the forest, the shadows, the wilderness that rages in all her might. Instead of fleeing after all these long bloody years the soldiers still return, they dig their ditches and pitch their tents. They hunt and fish, they lay their traps and take from the land. They know love, they know terror, they know and taste the glory of combat...
And in time Zerynthia too has known these things, shared them with the men she has encountered and celebrated in their differences...and similarities together. She has confronted the soldiers, fought and butchered but she has also learned from them valuable skills. Her sword grows swifter, her spear flies further, and likewise certain men have come to tame the horses the Amazon women so revere. While she has killed many, Zerynthia too has loved as women are permitted in the Nation, but always keeping herself at a distance so that when the time is right...she may flee back into the forests. Free and indebt to no one. Not even those of the Nation.
For her willingness to deal in trade and other business with the men, and sparing a select few, she has earned an unfavorable reputation among the Nation. While she is not outcast completely Zerynthia is not openly welcomed into the inner circle of the tribes which still exist. There are times however when she is called upon in secret, to perform some task, to either seek out information or the where abouts of captives. For while she is not one that is trusted or well-liked for her willingness to bridge the gap between Amazon and enemy, she is however recognized for her skill.
It is said her sole duty and loyalty lies with the God of War, sibling of the Goddess Artemis who is highly revered and worshipped by the Amazon Nation. Some in their spite claim that she is infact the spirit of a man born into the flesh of a woman. It is meant as an insult, but Zerynthia being what she is, with a personality forged through years of conflict and being on her own, it is perceived as a compliment. She is a woman who inhabits not the light of purity, nor the shadows of a tainted soul beyond redemption...she is merely a woman of varying shades of gray, who can go where she pleases, do as she desires -- so long as her sword arm is strong and her wits sharp.
